Terrarium workshop in Newtown during jacaranda season
Saturday 14th November falls in the middle of Sydney's jacaranda season, when the Inner West streets are worth the walk on their own. The King Street session starts at 11am and runs the same 90 minute format as every other Saturday sitting.
Mid-November is also when Sydney humidity begins climbing, which works in a terrarium's favour. Enclosed glass holds moisture rather than losing it, so a build that goes home in November is settled well before the worst of the summer heat arrives.
What's included in your terrarium workshop ticket
Each ticket covers everything you need on the day. You'll work with a glass terrarium vessel, four plants chosen for terrarium conditions, potting mix, stones, and decorative finishing elements. No tools, no materials, nothing to bring except yourself. The NGM team guides you through the build from start to finish, and you take the completed terrarium home at the end of the session. Sessions run for approximately 90 minutes. All skill levels welcome, including complete beginners.
Questions about the mid-November session
How is a terrarium different from a pot plant?
A terrarium is a closed or semi-closed system, so it recycles much of its own moisture instead of drying out between waterings. That makes it far more forgiving than an open pot, and a better option for anyone whose houseplants have not survived past attempts.
What happens when the plants outgrow the glass?
Terrarium plants are trimmed back rather than repotted, which keeps the planting in scale with the vessel. The NGM team covers how and when to prune during the session, and you can bring the terrarium into the nursery at King Street if it needs attention later.
Can someone come along without a ticket?
Seats are limited and each one includes a vessel, plants and materials, so everyone taking part needs their own ticket. Anyone tagging along is welcome to look around the nursery while the session runs, though there is no seat at the table without a booking.
How far ahead do sessions usually book out?
It varies by date, and sessions closer to Christmas tend to fill first. Seats show as available on this page until they sell, so the count here is live. If a date is gone, the next Saturday session is listed on the Newtown Garden Market workshops page.
Booking your spot
Tickets are sold in limited numbers to keep sessions genuinely hands-on. When a session shows as sold out, check back, as cancellations do occasionally free up spots. Corporate and private group bookings for the same format are available separately. Cancellation policy: contact the NGM team at least 48 hours before your session to transfer to a future date. No refunds within 48 hours of the session.
