Terrarium building in mid-winter Sydney

July is a good time to focus on what's growing inside. A terrarium handles Sydney winters well because it creates its own microclimate, holding humidity and warmth that outdoor plants can't access this time of year.

Terrarium workshops at Newtown Garden Market run every fortnight on Saturday mornings at the King Street store. You build a glass terrarium from scratch using live plants, soil, stones, and decorative elements, with the NGM team on hand throughout. The session takes around 90 minutes. You leave with a finished terrarium and enough knowledge to keep it alive long-term.

What's included in your terrarium workshop ticket

Each ticket covers everything you need on the day. You'll work with a glass terrarium vessel, four plants chosen for terrarium conditions, potting mix, stones, and decorative finishing elements. No tools, no materials, nothing to bring except yourself. The NGM team guides you through the build from start to finish, and you take the completed terrarium home at the end of the session. Sessions run for approximately 90 minutes. All skill levels welcome, including complete beginners.

Terrarium workshop questions

Do I need any experience to join a workshop?

No prior experience is needed. The NGM team explains every step at the session. The format works for people who have never touched a terrarium and for plant people who want a more structured build.

What do I need to bring?

Nothing. All materials are provided as part of your ticket, including the glass vessel, plants, soil, stones, and decorative elements.

Can I buy extra plants or supplies on the day?

Yes. The NGM store at 538 King Street is open during workshop sessions. Attendees are welcome to browse the full range before or after the session.

Are workshops suitable for corporate groups?

Private group bookings at the NGM store are available for corporate teams. Contact the NGM team directly for group enquiries.

Booking your spot

Tickets are sold in limited numbers to keep sessions genuinely hands-on. When a session shows as sold out, check back, as cancellations do occasionally free up spots. Corporate and private group bookings for the same format are available separately. Cancellation policy: contact the NGM team at least 48 hours before your session to transfer to a future date. No refunds within 48 hours of the session.
